The European Parliament is an essential forum for political debate and decision-making within the European Union. The Members of the European Parliament are directly elected by citizens in all Member States. They work to ensure that EU legislation reflects people’s interests and that the other EU institutions operate democratically.

Aligned with the principle that data is a valuable asset, the European Parliament has adopted a comprehensive approach to data aimed at enhancing interoperability and harmonisation. Central to this commitment, the European Parliament launched its Open Data Portal in 2023. This portal provides straightforward access to open data about the European Parliament, which can be freely shared and re-used. Designed to support the technical, legal, practical and social openness of public data, the portal is a major step in making the legislative process more accessible and transparent to EU citizens.

The Open Data Portal contains  rich datasets, including Members activities, voting records, and legislative proceedings, enabling citizens, researchers, and policymakers to gain insights into EU decision-making processes. By providing direct access to this information, the European Parliament builds public trust and encourages greater involvement in EU governance.

As a partner in the EU Open Data Days 2025, the European Parliament will further promote dialogue on best practices in data governance and the importance of data accessibility within the EU. By sharing its initiatives, the European Parliament demonstrates how open data can bridge gaps between institutions and citizens, supporting a more democratic, accountable and innovative European Union.
