Open data portals around Europe: Austria providing over 55,000 datasets on a wide range of topics
Making open data more accessible through user-friendly tools and training
Austria's national open data portal, data.gv.at, serves as a central hub for national open data, offering over 55,000 datasets across multiple areas, including economy, health, and environment. Developed through the Cooperation OGD Austria, the platform provides free access to public sector information, promoting transparency and empowering citizens, researchers, and businesses to make data-driven decisions.
A notable feature of data.gv.at is its comprehensive COVID-19 Open Data Information Portal, which consolidates pandemic-related data to facilitate rapid interaction among scientists, researchers, developers, and analysts. This initiative underscores the portal's role in supporting public health efforts and showcases the practical applications of open data. To further strengthen open data literacy, the portal offers E-learning modules on Open Data designed to help users understand and work with open data effectively. These courses cover essential topics, including data formats, analysis techniques, and best practices for data reuse.
In the Open Data Maturity Report 2024, Austria achieved an overall maturity score of 87%, exceeding the EU27 average of 83%. This achievement highlights Austria’s ongoing dedication to strengthening digital governance and ensuring alignment with EU data standards. By making its datasets available on platforms like data.europa.eu, Austria actively contributes to a more interconnected European open data ecosystem, enabling cross-border cooperation and comparative analysis.
As Austria continues to expand its open data initiatives, it reinforces its role as a leader in transparency, innovation, and digital transformation. With a wealth of accessible datasets and a strong focus on modernising public services, the country is driving progress towards a more data-centric future.
