Understand how legislation affects open data through our Academy

Reusing and publication of open data is shaped by legal regulations and legislation

Our data.europa.eu Academy course ‘Understanding the legal side of open data’ is developed for data users who want to learn about legislation and regulations related to open data. With webinars and reading materials, users can teach themselves and create a deeper understanding about the current legal challenges on the use and distribution of open data. Moreover, the material is regularly updated to keep up with upcoming challenges on topics like intellectual property or data protection.

The course contains four different lessons, where the lesson on ‘Artificial Intelligence and data ecosystems’ explores the opportunities AI can bring to our lives and contains content on the link between AI and fundamental rights, such as data privacy and protection. A series of three webinars hosted in 2024 by data.europa.eu Academy are found in this lesson to become an AI open data expert. The second lesson ‘Open data licensing’ introduces what open data licensing means in practice so you can select the right open data license for your dataset. The lesson also includes the ‘Licensing Assistant’ tool that provides a description of the available open data license.

The other two lessons found in this course are ‘Introduction to data protection’ and ‘Introduction to intellectual property and competition law’. The first touches upon the European data protection landscape and laws like the General Data Protection Act that impact the data ecosystem and exchange of data. The second provides you with insights into the shift in intellectual property licensing, like with our webinar on data ownership

Are you ready to become a legal expert in open data? Explore the Academy course and stay tuned since new content is regularly added to keep you up to date with legal developments in the EU.
