Pride Month is here: How open data is valuable in countering disinformation
Join us in celebrating the Pride Month in June, a time to raise awareness on the human rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer persons (LGBTIQ+). Unfortunately, the people of this community still face stigmatisation, violence, and discrimination, based on who they are. As the EU strives to create an environment of safety and equality, this month is filled with several activities aimed at promoting awareness on the topic.
Already in May, the EU started the conversation on the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), by highlighting how inclusive policies can tackle discrimination against people from the LGBTIQ+ community. Giving visibility to this topic helps people realise that equality is not fully guaranteed in every country, and that improvements are still needed. This year, the European External Action Service (EEAS) focuses their Pride campaign on countering disinformation and false narratives and promoting social acceptance and inclusion.
Open data contributes to countering disinformation by increasing the amount of information available for people that is both clear and transparent. For instance, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency published the yearly update of their LGBTIQ+ survey, also available on data.europa.eu, to which more than 100,000 people who identify as LGBTIQ+ participated. Given that the latest survey shows that people from this community experience more harassment, bullying, and violence, the LGBTIQ+ community believes that law and policy changes further help to improve the situation.
To reach the goal of protecting fundamental rights and ensure equal treatment and equality for all, indicated in the LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025, it is necessary to work together on a more inclusive Europe.
