Open data portals around Europe: The central open data catalogue of Portugal

How Portugal’s open data portal facilitates data sharing and reuse

With close to 10 000 datasets, dados.gov is the open data portal of the Portuguese Public Administration that provides access to many different topics. As an open portal, any user can choose to upload a dataset, for personal use or from a business perspective. With this initiative, the Portuguese government wants to motivate data reuse so citizens, businesses, and researchers can leverage public data to create impactful solutions.

On their portal, an extensive collection of datasets can be found, covering diverse categories such as healthcare, transportation, environment, and education. The portal has a user-friendly design, with search filters on the organisational source, formats, and licenses. The datasets are published by more than 7 200 unique users from 159 different organisations. The dados.gov homepage displays featured topics and news regularly published about hosted webinars or relevant open data events in Portugal.

Dados.gov promotes data reuse by displaying cases where open data is reused on their platform. More than 80 cases on different topics inspire users to create their own data visualisations with the help of datasets. For example, a user has created a dashboard on the fire distribution on Portugal’s mainland. The portal offers other users the opportunity to read about which datasets have been used and start a discussion that stimulates engagement and collaboration. Another useful resource on their platform is the API tutorial, that helps you upload and modify your datasets.

By unlocking the potential of public data, dados.gov.pt is paving the way for a more informed and engaged society. The platform is available in different languages, allowing you to easily explore data about Portugal yourself and use it for your research.
